Sophie Hoevelkamp prepared a persuasive speech about the US Constitution entitled, "Gideon v. Wainwright: the Crisis of Legal Representation, and Veteran Benefits" and presented it to local American Legion representatives on December 14. She also gave an extemporaneous speech over Article IV, Section 4, from this year's assigned topics list. She impressed the judges and will compete again at the County level on January 4th.

Brennan Vollstedt and Jesse Gay competed in Novice Public Forum debate at Des Moines Lincoln on Saturday. They received first place after facing off against teams from Des Moines Roosevelt and Norwalk. Sophie competed as a "maverick" in varsity debate and went 1-3 against Dowling, CAM, Johnston, and Des Moines Roosevelt She maintained consistently high speaker points across the board.
